Korean is spoken by 70 million people in North and South Korea as well as by significant populations in China, the U.S., and Japan. It is considered a critical language by the U.S. Department of Defense and has been growing in popularity as a language of study in the U.S.: according to the Modern Language Association, Korean saw the largest percentage increase in enrollments of any language in the U.S. between 1958 and 2021.
