Haitian Creole, which is also known as Kreyol, is one of Haiti’s official languages in addition to French. It developed in Haiti during the 18th century from contact between European colonizers, African enslaved people, and indigenous peoples. Massachusetts has the second-highest population of Haitians in the U.S. and is home to the nation's first dual-language Haitian Creole and English school.
